Location of Stadiums and Villages

For Gold Coast 80% of the planned venues to host the sports already existed. Carrara Stadium is one of the already existing venues and will be the main home for the athletics events with marathons and distances events held at Southport Broadwater Parkland. The stadium already has a number of great facilities and capacity of 25 000 although temporary seating to increase capacity to 40 000 while the games are on will be put in. An extension of the existing renewable energy investment at Carrara Stadium and the surrounding area will be done. A new training venue will also be build across from the main stadium which will be the Carrara Sport and Leisure Centre where the athletes can warm up. This will remain a permanent infrastructure used as the City’s main athletics centre in legacy to the 2018 games.

Main venues for the games are also located close to the athlete’s village with the Carrara Stadium approximately a 20 minuet drive from the athlete’s village in Parkwood. It is in central Gold Coast and is already accessible by public transport; however in games mode several more services will be implemented to handle the extra flow of people.

A new rail system “Gold Coast light rail” will directly service a number of key venues for the games and will connect with the major accommodation centres of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach along with the athletes’ village in Parklands. Plans to extends the line to connect with a park and ride facility and heavy rail station at Parkwood are also in the Gold Coast City Council’s sights as this is allow rail and freeway access from Brisbane. Athletes will also travel in fleets dedicated to each constituent group on routes that are segregated from public access ensure safety and reliability.
